BMW Blue Smoke on Startup: Causes and Costs

Blue smoke after idling or at startup on the N63 and N62 V8s points to valve stem seals in our sources, and on the N20 the cold-start smoke is sometimes only the updated oil feed line. White smoke is a different list. Seal jobs are labor-heavy and quotes spread widely.

N63: valve stem seals

The N63 page lists blue smoke at startup or after idling, burning about a quart of oil every few hundred to 1,000 miles, and oily spark plugs. The dealer in one source dropped the engine, and owners had the job covered under the N63 settlement. See N63 Valve Stem Seals and BMW N63 engine.

N62: valve stem seals

The N62 threads price the same job on the X5 V8. See N62 Valve Stem Seals and BMW N62 engine. One owner wrote that just changing the valve seals would not be the right fix.

N20: check the oil feed line

The N20 turbo page lists blue smoke on cold start and notes it is sometimes only the updated oil feed line. See N20 / N26 Turbocharger Replacement before paying for a turbo.

White smoke, and what to check

White smoke has its own list in the BMW White Smoke From the Exhaust: Causes and Costs. Ask what a quote includes; the N63 shop price includes gaskets and breather hoses.
