BMW Cold Start Rattle, Whine and Squeal: Causes by Engine
A rattle or whine from the front of a BMW engine on a cold start is the timing chain on the N20 and N63, a rattle that changes with throttle is more likely the N54 wastegate or VANOS, and a squeal that goes away as the engine warms can be the belt, tensioner or idler.

Sort by the sound
The repair pages list each noise with its own pattern. Rattle on cold start from the front of the engine and a whine that rises with RPM are timing chain symptoms. A metallic rattle when lifting off the throttle or at light load is the wastegate. A rattle on acceleration with idle problems is VANOS. A squeal on cold start is the belt. These are reported patterns, so a scan and inspection come before parts.
Timing chain: N20 and N63
On the N20, the chain page lists a whine or whirring from the front that rises with RPM, a rattle on cold start, timing or camshaft correlation codes and plastic guide pieces in the oil pan. Cars built before roughly early 2015 had the original guide design that fails most. A dealer tech warns many quotes leave out the oil pump chain and guide, so make sure the quote includes it. See N20 Timing Chain & Guides.
On the N63 V8, the chain job is usually engine-out. A Reddit tech puts it at about 44 hours alone, and one owner got 75 percent covered by asking BMW about goodwill. See N63 V8 Timing Chains & Guides.
On 2007 to 2010 N54 cars, a metallic rattle when lifting off the throttle or at light load, worse when warm, is the wastegate. Check vacuum lines and boost solenoids first, and check whether the car is still under the 8-year, 82,000-mile emissions warranty before paying. See N54 Wastegate Rattle.
On the N52 and N54, a rattle on acceleration with rough idle, stalling at stops and VANOS codes such as 2A82 and 2A87 is the solenoids. See VANOS Solenoids.
A squeal on cold start, a chirp that changes with RPM, visible cracks or a wobbling idler or tensioner point at the accessory belt. The page says to replace the tensioner and idler with the belt and to photograph the belt routing before removal, and it is a weekend DIY for most cars. See Serpentine Belt, Tensioner & Idler. An oil leak onto the belt can also make it slip or squeal (Oil Filter Housing Gasket (OFHG)).
In the repairs owners have priced, a rattle on cold start from the front of the engine is the timing chain on the N20 and N63. A rattle at light throttle is the N54 wastegate, and a rattle on acceleration with codes is VANOS.
