BMW Eccentric Shaft Sensor (Valvetronic)

The eccentric shaft sensor on the N52 is a Valvetronic part. The cited threads include a dealer replacement figure for a 2008 X5 3.0 and a DIY price for a sensor, and an owner mentions a small valve replaced during the sensor job. VANOS faults are a different set of parts.

What the threads say

The 2011 thread is titled Defective eccentric shaft sensor. The 2018 thread is a list of N52 known issues for the E70 X5. See Eccentric Shaft Sensor (Valvetronic), BMW N52 engine and BMW E70 repair costs.

VANOS is not Valvetronic

The VANOS page lists rough idle, stalling at stops and VANOS codes such as 2A82 and 2A87 on the N52 and N54. See VANOS Solenoids and the BMW VANOS Solenoid Symptoms and Replacement.

The valve cover job

The N52 valve cover is plastic and can warp or crack. The valve cover page lists the N52 cars and the N51 SULEV note. See Valve Cover / Valve Cover Gasket. Ask your shop whether the sensor and the gasket share any labor.

Before you pay

Another owner questioned a charge for the sensor in the 2018 thread without saying whether it was parts or labor, so do not use it as a quote. Ask for the part and labor separately.
