The G20 3 Series issues owners report most often are on the B58 and B48 engines (a cracked oil filter housing that leaks coolant, water pump leaks and valve cover leaks), plus xDrive driveline parts and routine items like spark plugs, and each is linked below to what owners actually paid.

How to read this list
This guide covers the G20 330i, 330i xDrive and M340i. It is built from repair reports that BimmerQuote has collected and cited, so it shows what owners have actually been quoted or have paid for, not a manufacturer defect rate. If a problem is not listed here, that can simply mean we have not found enough reported prices yet. The model page at BMW G20 repair costs lists every repair that affects the chassis.
The G20 330i uses a 2.0L four-cylinder (B46 or B48) and the M340i uses the 3.0L B58 inline-six, so some entries below apply to one engine only. Check the engine listed on each repair page before comparing quotes.
Cooling system and oil filter housing
The headline G20 repair in our data is the plastic oil filter housing on the B58 and B48. Owners describe a coolant puddle, a low coolant warning and a smell near the rear right of the engine, and sometimes the housing cracks while the filter cap is being removed. Book time cited is about five hours, but some shops billed much more, and many quotes bundle the heat management module, hoses or the water pump. See B58 / B48 Oil Filter Housing (Coolant Leak).
The B58 water pump is the other cooling item. Owners report coolant loss, a coolant smell or crust near the front of the engine, and overheating warnings, and early-production cars may need the pump support replaced as well, which changes the price. See B58 Water Pump (Coolant Pump). On four-cylinder G20s, the mechanical pump and bracket assembly is covered in Water Pump (N20 / B46 / B48).
A leaking plastic valve cover is a reported B58 issue, with owners describing a burning oil smell, seepage at the cover edge, and oil in the spark plug wells that can cause misfires. The cover is normally replaced as an assembly and the injectors come out, so labor varies a lot: reports range from roughly six to thirteen and a half billed hours. One G20 owner noted that the same part number is sold under another brand for less. Some B58 cars may be covered by an extended warranty or campaign, so check by VIN. See B58 Valve Cover Replacement.
Spark plugs are a scheduled item rather than a failure. The plug reminder appears in the service system, and owners and shops say coils only need replacing if they fail or test bad. Dealer quotes in our data are common, so an independent quote is worth getting for comparison. See Spark Plugs & Ignition Coils (B58 / B48). For fuel delivery, the in-tank low pressure pump is a known cause of a drivetrain malfunction warning and stalling on B46/B48 cars; see Low Pressure Fuel Pump (In-Tank).
If your G20 has xDrive, three driveline items show up in the repair data. The transfer case actuator is behind "drivetrain malfunction" warnings, shudder on tight turns, and xDrive stuck in rear-wheel drive. Dealers sometimes quote a whole transfer case when only the actuator is bad, so diagnose before paying; see Transfer Case Actuator (xDrive VTG). The front CV axles cause clicking while turning and grease slung inside the wheel, and a torn boot caught early can sometimes be re-booted rather than replacing the axle; see xDrive Front CV Axles.
The driveshaft flex disc (also called the guibo) is the rubber coupling that gives a clunk on takeoff or a thud on and off throttle when it tears. Mark the driveshaft orientation before unbolting, and inspect the center support bearing while the shaft is loose. See Driveshaft Flex Disc (Guibo).
Worn struts show up as an oil-wet strut body, a floaty ride, nose dive under braking and cupped tire wear. Adaptive dampers cost far more than standard ones, so confirm which your car has before comparing quotes; see Struts & Shocks Replacement. Afterward, an alignment keeps the new parts from wearing the tires (Wheel Alignment). The A/C condenser sits right behind the grille and is easily holed by road debris; see A/C Condenser Replacement.
On the electrical side, replacing the battery on a G20 requires registering the new battery with the car. If you skip registration the new battery can be chronically undercharged, and start-stop may be disabled after a DIY swap. See Battery Replacement & Registration.
In the repair reports we have collected, the most-discussed G20 problems are the cracked plastic oil filter housing on B58/B48 engines, B58 water pump and valve cover leaks, and xDrive driveline parts. That reflects what owners have priced, not a measured failure rate.
Is the G20 reliable?
We do not track failure rates, so we cannot rank it. What we can say is which repairs owners have reported, listed above, and what they were quoted for each.
