BMW Guibo and Flex Disc Replacement

A clunk on takeoff, a thud on and off the throttle, or a clunk in parking lots and stop-and-go traffic is the driveshaft flex disc, also called the guibo or giubo. Vibration under load shows up if it is badly torn. Mark the driveshaft orientation before unbolting it, replace the self-locking nuts, and inspect the center support bearing while the shaft is loose. We do not have a separate priced center support bearing job.

What a bad guibo does

The symptom list is a clunk on takeoff, a thud as you get on or off the throttle, vibration under load if the disc is badly torn, and a torn or cracked guibo you can see on a lift. The note says a torn guibo often shows up as a clunk in parking lots or stop-and-go traffic. See Driveshaft Flex Disc (Guibo). The broader clunk and vibration pages are the BMW Clunk Over Bumps: Suspension and Driveline Causes and the BMW Vibration and Steering Shimmy: Brakes, Mounts and Driveshaft.

The part has three names

The page says a guibo, also spelled giubo, is the rubber flex disc in the driveshaft, and that it is the same part. xDrive cars may also have a front propshaft coupling. The cars named are the E9x, F3x and G3x 3 and 5 Series and the E60. See BMW E90 repair costs, BMW F30 repair costs and BMW G30 repair costs.

What the job includes

Pelican lists about 3 hours DIY on an E90, and the exhaust and heat shield usually come down. Replace the self-locking nuts. One general shop billed 2.5 hours of labor for a guibo swap. Mark the driveshaft orientation before unbolting. Inspect the center support bearing while the shaft is loose. That inspection is the only center support bearing guidance in our data. There is no separate price for the bearing, so do not add one to a guibo quote unless the shop has written it as its own line.

What it is not

Shudder on a tight turn is the transfer case, not the guibo. See the BMW xDrive Transfer Case Shudder. A clunk over bumps from the front, with a shimmy under braking, is the thrust arm bushing (Front Control Arms & Thrust Arm Bushings). A clunk shifting between reverse and drive on an E46, with cracks in the trunk floor, is the BMW E46 Rear Subframe Cracks. A corner that sits low on an X5 is air suspension, in the BMW X5 Air Suspension Sag.

Common questions

What is a BMW guibo?

The repair page says the guibo, also spelled giubo, is the rubber flex disc in the driveshaft. Flex disc and guibo are the same part.

How much does a BMW guibo replacement cost?

Driveshaft Flex Disc (Guibo) on a BMW E90/E92/F30/F32 and similar models typically costs $425–$750 at an independent shop, $970–$1,200 at a BMW dealer, or $118–$200 in parts DIY, based on 9 real owner-reported prices.

What are the symptoms of a bad flex disc?

A clunk on takeoff, a thud on and off the throttle, a clunk in stop-and-go traffic, and vibration under load if the disc is badly torn.

Does guibo replacement include the center support bearing?
