BMW N20 Common Problems and Repair Costs
The N20 problem owners report most is the timing chain and guides, followed by the turbocharger and wastegate, cooling parts (water pump, expansion tank), valve cover leaks and the charge pipe, and each is linked below to what owners actually paid.

What the data covers
The N20 and the SULEV N26 are the four-cylinder turbo engines our repair pages tie to the 2012 to 2016 328i, 428i, 228i, 528i, X1, X3 xDrive28i and Z4 sDrive28i. The engine page is BMW N20 engine. As usual, these are repairs owners reported, not failure rates.
Timing chain and guides
Whining or whirring from the front of the engine that rises with RPM, a rattle on cold start, correlation codes, or plastic guide pieces in the oil pan are the signs owners describe. Cars built before roughly early 2015 had the original guide design that fails most. Make sure a quote includes the oil pump chain and guide, not only the main chain; a dealer tech warns that many quotes leave it out. See N20 Timing Chain & Guides.
Drivetrain malfunction, wastegate rattle or boost control faults, blue smoke on cold start and power loss under boost are the turbo symptoms. Blue smoke on cold start is sometimes only the updated oil feed line, so rule that out first. Labor is often quoted at 8 to 10 hours. See N20 / N26 Turbocharger Replacement. A loud pop and loss of boost is more likely the plastic charge pipe, which is also seen on N20 cars (N55 Charge Pipe).
The N20 uses an electric water pump (Water Pump (N20 / B46 / B48)). On F30 cars the coolant expansion tank, flange and turbo coolant return line are the other leak points, and early N20 and N26 cars built to August 2012 can show a false low coolant warning from a corroded level-sensor connector, per BMW bulletin SI B17 02 12 (F30 Coolant Expansion Tank & Coolant Lines). A thermostat swap is often done with the pump (Thermostat Replacement).
For persistent unexplained coolant loss, the head gasket is the worry. Our data has only a few quotes with very different scope, so treat Head Gasket Replacement as a rough guide and test first.
The valve cover job is longer on the N20 than on the sixes, because the intake side parts, injector harness and vacuum lines have to come off. A BimmerFest member notes the N26 valve cover gasket is covered for 15 years or 150,000 miles in PZEV states. See Valve Cover / Valve Cover Gasket. The in-tank pump is a known cause of a drivetrain malfunction warning and stalling (Low Pressure Fuel Pump (In-Tank)), and carbon cleaning is listed for the direct-injection N20 (Carbon Cleaning / Walnut Blasting).
