BMW N52 Common Problems and Repair Costs

The N52 repairs owners report are VANOS solenoids, oil leaks at the valve cover and oil filter housing, the electric water pump and thermostat, radiator end tanks and, on early E90 cars, broken aluminum head bolts that mimic a head gasket leak.

Scope of this guide

This guide covers the repairs in our data that name the N52. Our repair pages tie it to the E9x 325i, 328i and 328xi and to the 528i and X3 3.0si. N51 SULEV cars are a close variant with their own warranty notes. The engine page is BMW N52 engine.

As elsewhere on BimmerQuote, the figures show what owners reported paying, not how often a part fails.

VANOS and idle problems

Rough idle, stalling at stops, hesitation at highway speed and VANOS codes such as 2A82 and 2A87 point at the solenoids. Owners say the two are interchangeable top and bottom, so swapping them shows whether the fault follows. UK owners cite OE-supplier solenoids at far lower prices than genuine, though we do not count those prices here. See VANOS Solenoids.

Oil leaks

The valve cover leak is the common N52 oil leak: burning oil smell, seepage around the cover edge, oil in the spark plug wells. N51 SULEV owners report both the cover and gaskets being replaced under the SULEV emissions warranty, so check your warranty before paying. See Valve Cover / Valve Cover Gasket.

The oil filter housing gasket leak affects the N52 too, per our oil filter housing page (Oil Filter Housing Gasket (OFHG)), and the oil pan gasket is a heavier job: on E9x rear-wheel-drive cars the oil pan bolts are aluminum and torque-to-angle, so a torque angle gauge is needed (Oil Pan Gasket). Check the diagnosis before authorizing the rear main seal (Rear Main Seal).

Cooling: water pump, radiator, heater core

The electric water pump and thermostat are replaced together on the N5x engines, and owners report overheating warnings, the fan at full speed and pump fault codes (Electric Water Pump + Thermostat). E9x radiators leak at the side tanks; manual and automatic cars take different radiators, so order by VIN (Radiator Replacement (E9x)). A sweet smell in the cabin with foggy windows points at the heater core (Heater Core Replacement).

The head gasket question

Early E90 N52 engines used aluminum head bolts that can break and mimic a head gasket leak. Several 325i and 330i owners in our source thread hit this at roughly 50 to 60k miles. Oil leaks are also often mistaken for a head gasket failure, so confirm with a leak-down or combustion gas test before approving the job. See Head Gasket Replacement.

Other repairs on the list

Engine mounts (Engine Mounts), the alternator (Alternator Replacement), the starter (Starter Motor Replacement) and the A/C compressor (A/C Compressor (E9x)) are the other N52 items with owner prices. Get a second opinion on mounts: in one thread an independent shop found the mounts the dealer flagged still fine years later.

Common questions

What are the most common N52 problems?

Owners report VANOS solenoids, valve cover and oil filter housing leaks, the electric water pump, radiator leaks and, on early E90 cars, broken aluminum head bolts.

How much does N52 valve cover work cost?

Valve Cover / Valve Cover Gasket on a BMW 328i (N52, N51 or N20), 335i, 535i or X5 (N54/N55) typically costs $400–$2,000 at an independent shop, $1,300–$2,600 at a BMW dealer, or $38–$630 in parts DIY, based on 26 real owner-reported prices.

How much does an E9x radiator replacement cost?

Radiator Replacement (E9x) on an E90/E91/E92/E93 3 Series (325i, 328i, 335i) typically costs $230–$1,000 at an independent shop, $2,210 at a BMW dealer, or $154–$615 in parts DIY, based on 16 real owner-reported prices.

Is an N52 head gasket leak always a head gasket?

Not always. Oil leaks are often mistaken for a head gasket, and early E90 N52 cars used aluminum head bolts that can break and look like one. Get a leak-down or combustion gas test first.

Are N51 SULEV repairs covered?

Some owners had the valve cover and radiator replaced under the SULEV emissions warranty. Regular N52 radiators are not covered, according to E90post owners. Ask a dealer to check your VIN.
