How to read this list
This guide is built from the N54 repair reports BimmerQuote has collected and cited. It shows which repairs owners have been quoted or have paid for. It is not a failure rate, and a repair with few reports may simply be one owners talk about less. The engine overview is at BMW N54 engine.
The N54 is the twin-turbo inline-six in the 335i, 135i, 535i, X6 35i, Z4 35i and 1M, according to our fuel system repair data. Several repair pages below list the chassis codes the prices came from, so check that before comparing a quote.
Fuel system: high pressure pump and injectors
The N54 fuel system is the best-documented N54 repair in our data. Owners describe a long crank or hard start, an "engine malfunction, reduced power" message, fuel pressure codes and misfires on several cylinders when injectors are the cause. See N54 High Pressure Fuel Pump & Injectors.
Two practical points come from the source threads. Dealer and independent ranges mix pump jobs and injector jobs, so read what each price covers. And commenters recommend logging fuel pressure before replacing the pump, because the low pressure pump can cause the same symptoms. On the Z4 quote, commenters said the injectors were the bulk of the dealer bill and that an independent shop saves roughly a thousand in labor.
Turbo wastegate rattle
A metallic rattle when lifting off the throttle or at light load, worse when warm, is the wastegate rattle owners report on 2007 to 2010 cars. Sometimes boost-related fault codes come with it. Before paying for a fix, check vacuum lines and boost solenoids, since they can add to the rattle. See N54 Wastegate Rattle.
Our data on this one is mostly rebuild-service prices that cover the turbos only, so US shop prices to remove and refit the turbos are thin. One source suggests checking whether the car is still inside the emissions warranty before paying anything.
Oil leaks and cooling
The oil filter housing gasket is the classic N54 and N55 oil leak: a burning oil smell and oil on the serpentine belt. Prices spread mostly by scope, gasket only versus gasket plus belt, tensioner and pulleys. See Oil Filter Housing Gasket (OFHG). The valve cover and its gasket are the second leak (Valve Cover / Valve Cover Gasket), and the rear main seal is the one to rule out when oil collects where the engine meets the transmission (Rear Main Seal).
For cooling, the electric water pump and thermostat are usually replaced together (Electric Water Pump + Thermostat), and the radiator (Radiator Replacement (E9x)) and heater core (Heater Core Replacement) show up on E9x cars.
VANOS, carbon and sensors
Rough idle, stalling at stops, hesitation at highway speed and VANOS codes such as 2A82 and 2A87 point to the VANOS solenoids. Owners say swapping the two solenoids is a quick way to see whether the fault moves from intake to exhaust before buying parts, and the job takes about 15 to 20 minutes. See VANOS Solenoids.
Direct injection builds up carbon. Owners report N55 cars with much less carbon than N54 cars at the same mileage, and many skip the service on an N55. See Carbon Cleaning / Walnut Blasting. Oxygen sensors are a smaller item: O2 / Oxygen Sensor Replacement.
What to check before buying an N54 car
Ask for service records showing which of the jobs above were already done, and look for oil on the belt area and coolant crust. Listen for the wastegate rattle at light throttle, and ask how the fuel system has been handled. Many N54 prices in our data come from E9x cars; the BMW E90 3 Series Buying Guide: What It Costs to Fix lists what to check on that body.
