BMW Power Steering Leak or Pump Failure

On cars with hydraulic power steering, leaks are often at the cooler-line O-rings or crush washers, which is a cheap fix, before a pump or hose. The cited X5 owners priced hoses and pumps separately. On the F30 the electric steering rack is a different repair, and BMW campaigns are worth asking about first.

E90, E91 and E92: leaks and the pump

The E90 page lists a whine when turning, fluid on the reservoir, hoses or under the car, and heavy steering. It says leaks are often at the cooler-line O-rings or crush washers, and that a cracked plastic pump pulley is worth checking. See E90 Power Steering Hoses & Pump and BMW E90 repair costs.

E53 and E70 X5

Three Xoutpost threads price hoses and pumps. One compares a dealer quote for a single hose with a pressure-hose shop, another prices a new LuK pump, and a 2021 thread is about a pump that still whined after replacement. The E53 and E70 pump prices are for different cars. See Power Steering Pump & Hoses.

F30 and F31: the electric rack

The F30 and F31 use electric power steering, so this is a rack repair rather than a hose or pump. The page lists a sudden loss of assist, a steering warning light and notchy or heavy steering, and says to check BMW for an open campaign or goodwill before paying. See Electric Steering Rack (F30).
