BMW Spark Plugs and Ignition Coils: When to Replace and What It Costs

On the N55, B48 and B58, spark plugs are the scheduled item and appear as a service reminder, while ignition coils only need replacing if they fail or test bad, and owners say the job is short on a B58 with the right socket; we do not state a mileage interval because our sources do not give one.

Plugs are scheduled, coils are not

The N55 page lists a spark plug service reminder, misfire codes and rough idle, and says several commenters call coils not a wear item. The B58 and B48 page lists a CBS spark plug reminder and says coils only need replacing if they fail or test bad. Our sources do not give a sourced mileage interval by engine, so we leave that out; the cluster reminder is the trigger. See Spark Plugs & Ignition Coils (N55) and Spark Plugs & Ignition Coils (B58 / B48).

How long the job takes

A shop owner says they bill 1 to 2 hours depending on four or six cylinders. For a DIY N55 job it is an afternoon, and the strut brace and intake pipe may need to come out. On the B58 the plugs are near the top of the engine, and owners call it a short job with the right socket.

Getting a fair quote

Dealer plug quotes are common in the B58 sources, and the page says to get an independent quote for comparison. The N55 page also warns that a high dealer bill in one thread was plugs and coils on a V8, so it is not counted. Ask whether coils are in the quote and why. Bosch coil 12138643360 fits the B46, B48 and B58 per the page.

When misfires happen anyway

If you get misfire codes or a flashing check engine light, the causes are not only plugs and coils. Leaking injectors, VANOS solenoids, intake carbon and oil in the plug wells are covered in the BMW Rough Idle and Misfire: Causes and Repair Costs. Engine pages for these cars are at BMW N55 engine and BMW B58 engine. The BMW Oil Service: Condition Based Servicing, Value Service and Oil Spec covers the oil side of the same visit.
