BMW Alignment and Uneven Tire Wear Causes

An alignment is needed after tie rods, control arms, struts or new tires, and uneven inner or outer tire wear usually has a worn suspension part behind it. Our alignment prices are dealer quotes and posted specials, so ask for the printed before-and-after report.

What an alignment price covers

The alignment page notes that performance models and ADAS calibration can add cost beyond a basic four-wheel alignment, and asks for a printed report. See Wheel Alignment.

Tie rods, struts and bushings

The tie rod page lists loose or wandering steering, a clunk over bumps and uneven tire wear. It says to get an alignment after tie rods. The strut page lists a bouncy ride and cupped tire wear, and says to get an alignment after front struts. Thrust arm bushings show as a shimmy under braking and wandering at highway speed. See Tie Rods (Inner / Outer), Struts & Shocks Replacement and Front Control Arms & Thrust Arm Bushings.

Tire pressure and sensors

A tire pressure warning is a sensor job, not an alignment: see TPMS Tire Pressure Sensors (Set of 4) and the BMW TPMS Warning and Sensor Replacement.

Order of work

Do the suspension repair first and the alignment last. The BMW Clunk Over Bumps: Suspension and Driveline Causes covers the clunk side.
