BMW X5 E70 Buying Guide: What It Costs to Fix

On an E70 X5, check the rear air suspension, then the engine-specific items (N63 V8 coolant lines, valve stem seals and timing chain, 35i oil leaks, 35d EGR cooler and DPF), and ask for records of which were done.

What this guide covers

This guide covers the E70 X5 with the engines named on our repair pages: the 35i (N54 and N55), the xDrive50i (N63), the 4.8i (N62) and the xDrive35d (M57). The chassis page is BMW E70 repair costs. The costs are owner reports, not failure rates.

Air suspension

Look for a rear that sags overnight, a suspension or chassis warning, or a compressor running constantly. Replace both sides together and pull the compressor fuse before starting. A Canadian dealer quote is noted on the page but not counted. See X5 Rear Air Suspension Bags.

35i and V8 engine items

On a 35i, the oil filter housing gasket leak is the classic one, and E70 access is tighter than on a 3 Series (Oil Filter Housing Gasket (OFHG)). The oil pan gasket is also listed for the E70 (Oil Pan Gasket). On the 50i, the large N63 jobs are the turbo coolant lines, valve stem seals and timing chain (N63 Turbo Coolant Lines, N63 Valve Stem Seals, N63 V8 Timing Chains & Guides); see BMW N63 V8 Common Problems and Repair Costs. On an N62 X5, white smoke is also commonly valve stem seals, so get a clear diagnosis before approving a full head gasket job (Head Gasket Replacement).

Diesel (35d)

The 35d items are the EGR cooler, the DPF and the NOx sensors (X5 35d EGR Cooler (Diesel), Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) – X5 35d, NOx Sensors (X5 35d / Diesel)). See BMW X5 35d Diesel Problems and Repair Costs.

Other repairs

Owners also priced the water pump and thermostat (Electric Water Pump + Thermostat), the starter (Starter Motor Replacement), tie rods (Tie Rods (Inner / Outer)), the rear main seal (Rear Main Seal) and the transmission mechatronic sleeve on cars with the 6HP (Transmission Mechatronic Sleeve (ZF 6HP)). Replacing a whole transmission is a rare but large item (Automatic Transmission Replacement).
