BMW Clutch Slipping and Replacement Cost

A slipping clutch, a high engagement point or chatter pulling away points to the clutch on E9x and F3x manuals. The F30 quote in our data drops a lot without a new flywheel. If the rear main seal is also leaking, commenters say to do both jobs together because the labor overlaps.

The symptoms

The clutch page lists slipping under load, an engagement point high on the pedal, chatter or judder, and a rattle at idle from the dual-mass flywheel. The cars are the 328i and 335i manuals on the E90 and E92 and the F30 and F32 six-speeds. See E9x / F3x Clutch Replacement.

Flywheel and labor

One mechanic in the cited threads says he has reused more dual-mass flywheels than he has replaced. Labor on the F30 is about 4 hours, and older E90 estimates say 3 to 4 hours. Labor-only quotes exclude parts.

Rear main seal

Oil where the engine meets the transmission can be the rear main seal. On manuals commenters say to do the clutch at the same time. Double-check the diagnosis, because oil from the filter housing, oil pan or valve cover collects at the same spot. See Rear Main Seal and the BMW Oil Leak: Common Causes by Engine.

Vibration is a different list

A clunk on takeoff can be the guibo (Driveshaft Flex Disc (Guibo)), not the clutch. See the BMW Guibo and Flex Disc Replacement.
