BMW N62 V8 Problems and Repair Costs

The N62 repairs in our data are valve stem seals, the valley pan on the X5 V8s and the oil separator. The valve seal quotes in the threads range from a dealer figure that BMW mostly covered to an independent shop that agreed to a full job. White smoke on an N62 X5 is also commonly the valve seals, so confirm the cause before approving a head gasket.

What the data covers

This is a thread-based list from Xoutpost, not a reliability ranking. The cars cited are a 2008 X5 4.8i in two threads, a 2006 X5 4.4 and a 2004 X5 4.4. Engine page: BMW N62 engine. Model page: BMW E70 repair costs.

Valve stem seals

The 2013 thread asks owners what they paid and cites a dealer rate and an independent side job. In 2014 an owner at 63,000 miles had BMW cover most of an estimate. In 2015 an owner chose a Queens shop for a full job and heard of another independent doing only the seals. That owner wrote that just changing the valve seals would not be the right fix. See N62 Valve Stem Seals.

Valley pan and coolant pipes

On the X5 4.4 and 4.6is the valley pan leaks coolant. The 2013 and 2009 threads give independent quotes, and one shop said the coolant pipe job would take about 80 hours. Ask whether a quote includes the pipes. See Valley Pan Gasket.

Oil separator, and a head gasket look-alike

The 2012 thread on a 2006 X5 4.4 prices a crankcase vent and oil separator repair, with a DIY hose price. See CCV / Oil Separator. The head gasket page notes that on X5 N62 engines white smoke is also commonly valve stem seals, and asks for a clear diagnosis before a full head gasket job (Head Gasket Replacement). The BMW White Smoke From the Exhaust: Causes and Costs has the rest of that list.
