BMW Walnut Blasting and Carbon Cleaning

Walnut blasting cleans carbon off the intake valves on direct-injection BMWs. The symptoms on the repair page are a rough idle, cold-start misfires, a loss of power or hesitation, and misfire codes when the plugs and coils are good. Most of the prices are N54. N55 owners report much less carbon at the same mileage, and many skip the service.

When the page says to consider it

The cars named are direct-injection 135i, 335i and 535i models on the N54 or N55, and the 328i on the N20. A rough idle has cheaper causes to rule out first, which is what the BMW Rough Idle and Misfire: Causes and Repair Costs is for. A rattle on acceleration with VANOS codes is the solenoids, in the BMW VANOS Solenoid Symptoms and Replacement. See Carbon Cleaning / Walnut Blasting and BMW N54 engine.

N54 versus N55

The note says N55 owners report much less carbon than N54 owners at the same mileage, so many skip walnut blasting on an N55. The page is still mostly N54 prices, with one N55 shop quote. Do not treat an N54 price as the price for a B58. We do not have a B58 walnut blasting page. See BMW N55 engine.

What the quotes are

The page says commenters name a fair independent price, and that quotes well above that can mean the shop does not want the job. Read the repair page for that note rather than treating the full range as a typical bill, because the range includes a low garage quote and high shop quotes. DIY is described as a weekend job if you can pull the intake manifold, and the parts list is a blasting kit, walnut media and intake gaskets. Carbon Cleaning / Walnut Blasting on a BMW with the N54/N55/N20 engine typically costs $180–$1,300 at an independent shop, $600 at a BMW dealer, or $30–$75 in parts DIY, based on 11 real owner-reported prices.

It is not a 60,000 mile line item by itself

Nothing on the carbon page assigns it to 60,000 miles. The mileage service that is assigned is the spark plug change, in the BMW 60,000 and 100,000 Mile Service Costs. On an N54, the expensive fuel parts are a separate question, covered in the Why BMW N54 Injectors Cost So Much.
