Parts, not labor
The labor line says owners call injector replacement an easy DIY, and that the cost is almost all parts. Commenters on the Z4 quote say the injectors are about 75 percent of the dealer bill, and that an independent shop saves on the labor. See N54 High Pressure Fuel Pump & Injectors and BMW N54 engine. The rest of the N54 pattern is in the BMW N54 Common Problems and Repair Costs.
The range mixes two repairs
The notes say dealer and independent ranges mix high-pressure pump jobs and injector jobs, and that you have to read the "what" column. A pump quote and a six-injector quote are not the same repair. The page also says there is still only one independent pump price and no independent injector price. N54 High Pressure Fuel Pump & Injectors on a BMW with the N54 engine typically costs $600–$800 at an independent shop, $970–$4,000 at a BMW dealer, or $500–$3,300 in parts DIY, based on 13 real owner-reported prices.
Log fuel pressure first
Commenters recommend logging fuel pressure before replacing the high-pressure pump, because the low-pressure pump can cause the same long crank and reduced-power message. The in-tank pump is Low Pressure Fuel Pump (In-Tank). Symptoms for the N54 system are a long crank or hard start, an engine malfunction or reduced power message, fuel pressure codes, and misfires on several cylinders when the injectors are the cause.
Index 12, and what else to rule out
The page is about the index 12 piezo injectors. Carbon on the intake valves can also misfire an N54, which is the BMW Walnut Blasting and Carbon Cleaning. A single-cylinder misfire that follows one coil is not this job. The cars are the 2007 to 2013 335i and 335is, 135i, 535i, X6 35i, Z4 35i and 35is, and the 1M.
