BMW F30 3 Series Buying Guide: What It Costs to Fix

On an F30 3 Series, check the engine first (N20 timing chain and turbo, N55 oil leaks, B48 cooling), then the coolant expansion tank, the electric steering rack, the xDrive driveline and the front suspension, and ask which jobs are documented.

What this guide covers

This guide covers the F30 sedan and F31 wagon, which our repair pages tie to the 320i and 328i (N20), 335i (N55), 330i (B46/B48) and 340i (B58). The chassis page is BMW F30 repair costs. The costs are owner reports, not failure rates. For the current-generation car see BMW G20 3 Series Common Problems.

Engine by engine

Which engine the car has changes the checklist. N20 cars: the timing chain and guides (cars built before about early 2015 had the original guide design) and the turbo (N20 Timing Chain & Guides, N20 / N26 Turbocharger Replacement). N55 cars: oil leaks and the plastic charge pipe (Oil Filter Housing Gasket (OFHG), N55 Charge Pipe). B46 and B48 cars: the water pump and turbo coolant line (Water Pump (N20 / B46 / B48), B46/B48 Turbo Coolant Return Line). The 340i's B58 has its own list in B58 / B48 Oil Filter Housing (Coolant Leak) and B58 Water Pump (Coolant Pump).

Cooling and fuel

The coolant expansion tank is the F30's repeat offender; a cracked vent hose causes the same sudden leak and a dealer asked a small amount for the hose (F30 Coolant Expansion Tank & Coolant Lines). The in-tank fuel pump can cause a drivetrain malfunction warning and stalling (Low Pressure Fuel Pump (In-Tank)).

Steering, suspension and xDrive

Sudden loss of power steering assist, a steering warning light or notchy steering points at the electric steering rack; check BMW for open campaigns or goodwill because F30 EPS failures were common (Electric Steering Rack (F30)). A shimmy under braking or a clunk over bumps points at the front arms and thrust arm bushings (Front Control Arms & Thrust Arm Bushings). Struts wear as a floaty ride and cupped tires (Struts & Shocks Replacement).

xDrive cars add the transfer case actuator (Transfer Case Actuator (xDrive VTG)), front CV axles (xDrive Front CV Axles) and fluids (Transfer Case Fluid (xDrive), Front Differential Fluid (xDrive)). The ZF 8HP fluid service needs a scan tool for the final fill (ZF 8HP Transmission Fluid Service).

Routine and small repairs

Budget for brakes (Brake Pads & Rotors (Front / All Four)), brake fluid (Brake Fluid Flush / Service), alignment (Wheel Alignment) and the rear differential and driveshaft flex disc (Rear Differential Fluid Change, Driveshaft Flex Disc (Guibo)). Manual cars add the clutch (E9x / F3x Clutch Replacement). Door lock actuators (Door Lock Actuator) and window regulators (Window Regulator (Cable Type)) also appear in the owner reports.
