BMW Service Intervals Owners' Report: Fluids by Mileage

This is not BMW's official maintenance schedule: it collects the mileage and timing owners and shops mention on our repair pages, such as brake fluid about every 2 years, a transfer case around 40,000 to 60,000 miles and the ZF 8-speed fluid around 60,000 to 100,000 miles, and leaves out any item where our sources give no figure.

How to read this list

Check your owner's manual or a dealer for the official schedule on your car. Everything below is what owners and commenters said in the repair threads we cite, so it shows what people actually did, not what BMW requires. Items with no mileage in our sources are listed without one.

Time-based and reminder-based items

Brake fluid comes up with a CBS reminder about every 2 years (Brake Fluid Flush / Service). Engine oil comes from a CBS countdown (Oil Change / Oil Service), and spark plugs from a CBS reminder on the N55, B48 and B58 (Spark Plugs & Ignition Coils (N55), Spark Plugs & Ignition Coils (B58 / B48)). Coolant is long-life and many owners only change it with cooling work (Coolant Flush / Coolant Service, BMW Coolant Change: Long-Life Coolant, Flush Service and Bleeding). The brake fluid detail is in the BMW Brake Fluid Service: When It Is Due and What It Costs.

Drivetrain fluids by mileage

The pages list the rear differential at often around 30,000 to 60,000 miles (Rear Differential Fluid Change), the transfer case at around 40,000 to 60,000 miles (Transfer Case Fluid (xDrive)), the ZF 8-speed fluid at around 60,000 to 100,000 miles (ZF 8HP Transmission Fluid Service) and the E9x M3 dual-clutch fluid service at around 50,000 to 60,000 miles (E9x M3 DCT Service & Reseal).

Preventive repairs owners mention

Rod bearings on the E9x M3 are usually done preventively around 60,000 to 100,000 miles (S65 Rod Bearings (E9x M3)). The F30 and E9x thrust arm bushings often wear out by 40,000 to 60,000 miles (Front Control Arms & Thrust Arm Bushings). The belt kit has no mileage in our sources but should be replaced with the tensioner and idler (Serpentine Belt, Tensioner & Idler).

What we cannot give you

We do not have sourced intervals for oil, spark plugs, coolant or inspection services, or what BMW's old Inspection I and II covered, so we do not state them. See the guides on BMW Oil Service: Condition Based Servicing, Value Service and Oil Spec, BMW Spark Plugs and Ignition Coils: When to Replace and What It Costs and BMW Differential and Transfer Case Fluid Service (xDrive) for what each does cover.
